Magnesium Glycinate vs Citrate: How They Differ on the Label
Magnesium glycinate binds magnesium to the amino acid glycine; citrate binds it to citric acid. Citrate carries more elemental magnesium per gram of compound, so glycinate products often need two or three capsules where citrate needs one. Compare elemental magnesium per serving, not the figure on the front.
Glycinate and citrate are the two magnesium forms most people end up choosing between. They differ in what the mineral is bound to, in how much elemental magnesium a given milligram figure represents, and in how the resulting product is usually formulated and sold.
What each one is
Magnesium glycinate binds magnesium to glycine, an amino acid. It belongs to the group described on labels as chelated or amino acid chelated forms.
Magnesium citrate binds magnesium to citric acid. It is an organic acid salt, more soluble in water than the simple oxide salt, which is why it appears so often in powders and effervescent products.
Elemental content
Because glycine molecules are heavier than citrate, a gram of magnesium glycinate carries less elemental magnesium than a gram of magnesium citrate. In practice this means glycinate products often need more capsules per serving to reach a comparable elemental dose — two or three where a citrate product might use one or two.
When you compare two bottles, compare elemental milligrams per serving and the number of units in that serving. Comparing the front-label compound weight will mislead you every time.

Tolerability
The most commonly reported difference between magnesium forms is digestive. Magnesium salts draw water into the bowel, and forms differ in how much they do this — which is why one magnesium form is used deliberately as a laxative preparation at high dose. This is the practical reason many people move between forms. It is also a reason to change one variable at a time when you do.
Reading a blend
Many products contain both. If a label lists glycinate and citrate together, look for the amount of each; where only a combined total is given, you are being told less than the packaging implies.
