Multivitamins: Reading a Twenty-Nutrient Label
A multivitamin is the broadest label in the shop — twenty or more nutrients in one serving, each at an amount the front of the bottle never shows. Comparing two of them means putting their supplement facts panels side by side, because the same product name covers very different formulations.
Check the serving size first
Many multivitamins count two or three tablets as a single serving. Every figure on the panel refers to that serving, so a product that appears more complete may simply expect three tablets a day where its competitor expects one. This is the single most common misreading in the category.
Iron is usually the difference
Men’s, women’s and 50+ versions of the same brand typically differ mainly on whether iron is included and at what level, with smaller adjustments elsewhere. If you are comparing a “men’s” and a “women’s” formula, start there. See men’s vs women’s multivitamins and our label reading guide.
Percent daily value, and where it stops
The %DV column tells you how a nutrient amount relates to a reference intake, which makes it the fastest way to scan a panel. Not every ingredient has one — botanicals and several other additions show no %DV, which is not a defect but does mean there is no reference point to compare them against.
Nutrient forms inside the blend
The same nutrient appears in different forms across products: folate as folic acid or methylfolate, B12 as cyanocobalamin or methylcobalamin, vitamin E as natural or synthetic. These are named on the panel and are the substantive difference behind much of the price spread. See methylated multivitamins explained.
Upper limits still apply
If you take a multivitamin alongside single-nutrient supplements, the totals add up — particularly for the fat-soluble vitamins and for iron. Check the combined amount against established upper limits, and speak to a pharmacist if you are stacking several products.
