Magnesium Oxide vs Citrate: What Separates the Cheapest Form

Magnesium oxide carries the highest proportion of elemental magnesium by weight and costs least, which is why cheap tablets use it. Citrate is far more soluble, which is why powders and effervescent products use it. Both are used at higher doses as laxative preparations.

Magnesium oxide is the least expensive magnesium compound and the one most likely to be behind a large milligram figure on an inexpensive label. Citrate is the most common organic acid form. Comparing them is largely an exercise in reading past the headline number.

Elemental content runs the other way to price

Magnesium oxide carries a high proportion of elemental magnesium by weight, because the oxide part of the molecule is very light. That is why a single small tablet can state a large magnesium figure. Citrate carries proportionally less elemental magnesium for the same compound weight.

So on the panel, oxide often looks the stronger product per tablet — and per unit of cost it usually is, in elemental terms.

Solubility is the difference that shows up

The two compounds differ substantially in water solubility, with citrate dissolving far more readily. Solubility is the property most often cited when these forms are compared, and it is also why citrate is the form used in powders and effervescent tablets while oxide is used in compressed tablets.

Where oxide turns up unannounced

Magnesium oxide is common inside multivitamins and inside blended products, where it is a cost-effective way to show a magnesium figure on the panel. Bowel effects

Magnesium salts draw water into the bowel. Both of these forms are used in preparations sold specifically for that effect, at doses far above a daily supplement. This is the single most practical thing to know before choosing between them, and the reason to introduce any new magnesium product at the labelled dose rather than above it.
