How Much Melatonin Is Too Much?
Melatonin has no established tolerable upper intake level in the way vitamins and minerals do. Higher doses are not established as more effective, and reported effects such as next-day grogginess become more likely as the dose rises. Most accidental excess comes from gummy serving sizes, stacking blends, or label inaccuracy.
How much melatonin is too much is asked a great deal, and the honest answer is that it is not a single number — but there are several things that can be said usefully, and one of them matters more than the rest.
The short version
Melatonin does not have an established tolerable upper intake level in the way that vitamins and minerals do. What exists instead is guidance that lower doses are typically what is used, that higher doses are not established as more effective, and that unwanted effects become more likely as the dose rises.
What excess tends to look like
Reported effects associated with melatonin include daytime drowsiness, headache, dizziness and nausea. Grogginess persisting into the following day is among the more commonly described experiences at higher doses, which is worth knowing if you drive or operate machinery.
Where people exceed without meaning to
Three routes account for most of it:
- Serving size. A gummy bottle stating a figure on the front may mean two gummies. See comparing formats.
- Stacking. A blended sleep formula plus a standalone melatonin product. Both panels need reading and adding.
- Label accuracy. Analyses of US melatonin products have found actual content differing from the labelled amount, sometimes substantially. This is a documented limitation of the category.
Children — the most important part of this page
Accidental melatonin ingestion by children has increased markedly, and gummy products that look and taste like sweets are part of why. Store melatonin out of reach and out of sight, as you would any medicine.
If a child has taken melatonin that was not intended for them, contact a poison control centre or your local emergency services for advice. Do not wait to see what happens.
Do not increase the dose to chase an effect
If a labelled dose is not doing what you hoped, escalating is not the indicated next step — and given that higher doses are not established as more effective, it may simply produce more daytime grogginess. Persistent sleep difficulty is worth taking to a doctor, who can look at causes a supplement does not address.
