Melatonin Formats: Comparing Doses Across Gummies, Tablets and Liquids

Melatonin is sold in more formats than almost anything else in this catalogue, and the per-unit dose varies enormously between them. Comparing two products means converting both to the dose per serving first.

The formats

Format What to check
Tablets Dose per tablet; whether the serving is one or two.
Fast-dissolve / sublingual Labelled separately from standard tablets; same dose reading applies.
Extended release Releases over a period rather than at once. Not interchangeable with an immediate-release product at the same figure.
Gummies Frequently two gummies per serving. Also carry added sugars or sweeteners.
Liquids and sprays Dosed per measured volume or per spray, not per unit. Needs converting before comparison.
Capsules Often part of a blend — check what else is in it.

The serving-size trap

Gummies are where this bites most often. A bottle advertising a figure on the front may be describing two gummies, so a single gummy is half that. Every figure on a supplement facts panel refers to the serving stated at the top of it.

Blends

Melatonin appears inside combination sleep products alongside magnesium, L-theanine, valerian and botanicals. Where it does, the melatonin dose is listed on the panel with everything else — and it is worth finding specifically, because it varies as widely inside blends as it does in standalone products. See our relaxation formula comparison.

Do not stack unknowingly

If you take a blended sleep formula and a standalone melatonin product, add the two figures together. This is the most common way people end up at a much higher intake than they intended.

Content versus label

Analyses of melatonin products sold in the US have repeatedly found actual content differing from the labelled amount, in both directions. That is a limitation of the category rather than of any one brand, and it is a reason to treat precise dose comparisons between products as approximate.

Our melatonin comparison filters by strength and format. Before buying, please read side effects and interactions.
