When to Take Probiotics

Probiotic timing advice is more varied than for most supplements, largely because products differ in how they are formulated to survive the journey through the stomach.

Follow the product, not a general rule

Manufacturers give different instructions — with food, before food, on an empty stomach — and those instructions reflect how a particular product is made. Delayed-release capsules, enteric coatings and spore-forming organisms are all approaches to the same problem, and each implies different timing. The label on the product you have bought is a better guide than a general rule read elsewhere.

Consistency

Probiotic organisms are not generally described as taking up permanent residence; effects are associated with ongoing intake. A daily routine you keep matters more than the hour you keep it at.

Alongside antibiotics

This is the most common timing question and it has its own guide — see probiotics and antibiotics. If you are currently taking antibiotics, ask the pharmacist dispensing them; they can advise on spacing for your specific prescription.

Storage and travel

Where a product requires refrigeration, leaving it out defeats the purpose of buying it. If you travel, a shelf-stable product is the practical choice — check the storage line on the label before assuming.

Hot drinks

Powder products stirred into something hot are a straightforward way to reduce viable counts. Room temperature or cold liquid is the safe default unless the label says otherwise.

Give it time before judging

Whatever you are hoping for, changing product every few days makes it impossible to attribute anything. Introduce one product, at the labelled dose, and change one variable at a time.
