Creatine Monohydrate vs HCl and Buffered Forms
Creatine monohydrate is the form in most products and in most of the research. HCl and buffered versions are sold at lower gram doses on the claim that less is needed. Compare creatine content per serving and cost per serving rather than scoop count.
Creatine monohydrate is the form in most tubs and in most of the research. Several alternative forms are sold at higher prices with claims of improved solubility, absorption or tolerability. Here is what distinguishes them on the label.
The forms
Monohydrate
Creatine bound with a single water molecule. The most-studied form and the reference point against which the others are marketed. Typically dosed at three to five grams per serving.
Hydrochloride (HCl)
Creatine bound to hydrochloric acid, which increases water solubility. Products are frequently dosed at lower gram amounts than monohydrate, and the marketing case rests on that lower dose being sufficient. That is the claim to examine: a smaller serving is only an advantage if it delivers a comparable amount of creatine.
Buffered (often sold under a brand name)
Monohydrate with an alkaline agent, positioned as more stable in stomach acid. This claim has been examined in published comparisons against monohydrate.
Others
Creatine ethyl ester, magnesium chelate, nitrate and citrate all appear. Each is dosed differently, and each carries a different amount of creatine per gram of compound.
The comparison that actually matters
Creatine content per serving, and cost per serving. A tub of HCl at 750 mg per scoop and a tub of monohydrate at 5 g per scoop are not comparable on scoop count, on tub weight, or on price per tub. Convert both to grams of creatine per day at the labelled dose, then divide the price by the number of days the tub lasts.

Practical reading
If a product uses an alternative form, the panel should still state grams per serving. If it states only a proprietary blend total, you cannot determine the creatine dose at all.
